FUE facial-hair restoration

Beard Transplant Edinburgh

A beard transplant uses carefully selected donor hairs to improve patchy, sparse or absent facial-hair growth across areas such as the cheeks, jawline, moustache, goatee and sideburns.

Natural-looking beard restoration depends on donor-hair suitability, appropriate facial-hair design and precise control of graft angle, direction, spacing and density.

Facial-hair restoration

What Is a Beard Transplant?

A beard transplant is a surgical procedure in which follicular-unit grafts are removed from a suitable donor area and implanted into planned parts of the face.

How beard transplantation works

Individual grafts are normally extracted using an FUE technique, prepared and placed into small recipient sites across the planned beard area.

The treatment may be used to improve selected gaps, strengthen a patchy beard, reconstruct part of the beard or improve facial-hair balance.

Important planning considerations

  • Cause and pattern of limited beard growth
  • Donor density and donor-hair characteristics
  • Existing beard direction and curl pattern
  • Cheek-line, jawline and neckline design
  • Previous facial scarring or surgery
  • Realistic graft numbers and density
Donor supply limits the achievable density. A beard transplant redistributes existing donor hairs; it does not create an unlimited supply of new follicles.

Individual assessment

Who May Be Suitable for a Beard Transplant?

Suitability depends on donor strength, facial skin health, existing beard growth, medical history, the cause of limited growth and realistic expectations.

Beard transplantation may help with

  • Naturally sparse or patchy facial hair
  • Limited growth across selected cheek areas
  • Gaps around the jawline or chin
  • Selected moustache or goatee gaps
  • Selected stable facial scars
  • Realistic facial-hair density improvement

Surgery may not be suitable when

  • Donor hair is weak or significantly depleted
  • There is active skin inflammation or infection
  • The cause of facial-hair loss is undiagnosed
  • Scar tissue has unsuitable characteristics
  • Medical history makes surgery inappropriate
  • Expectations cannot be achieved safely
New or unexplained beard-hair loss should be assessed. A transplant should not be used to conceal an active skin or medical condition.

Facial-hair design

Planning a Natural-Looking Beard

Beard design should suit the patient’s existing facial hair, facial proportions, donor supply and preferred grooming style.

Cheek line Should avoid an unnaturally sharp or excessively high border.
Jawline Requires controlled density and direction along the lower face.
Moustache Fine directional placement is required around the upper lip.
Goatee and chin Density should blend with existing facial-hair growth.

Surgeon-led planning

Beard Assessment with Dr Harpreet Kalra

Consultation with Dr Kalra includes assessment of the donor area, facial-hair pattern, skin health, scarring, facial proportions and the areas the patient would like to improve.

Treatment planning should identify the proposed beard shape, estimated graft requirements, donor limitations, surgical risks, recovery and realistic density.

Treatment stages

How a Beard Transplant Works

The exact procedure depends on the treatment area, donor supply, graft requirements, skin characteristics and individual surgical plan.

Assessment

Donor hair, facial-hair growth, skin health and treatment goals are reviewed.

Beard Design

The cheeks, jawline, moustache, chin or selected gaps are planned.

Local Anaesthetic

The planned donor and recipient areas are numbed for surgery.

FUE Extraction

Individual follicular-unit grafts are removed from the donor area.

Implantation

Grafts are placed according to the intended angle, direction and density.

A written plan should explain the proposed graft number. It should also identify the surgeon, treatment location, total cost, risks, aftercare and follow-up arrangements.

Facial-hair treatment areas

What Areas Can a Beard Transplant Treat?

Cheeks

Selected cheek gaps or low facial-hair density may be assessed.

Jawline

Grafts may be used to strengthen selected areas along the jaw.

Chin and Goatee

Selected chin or goatee gaps may be included in the design.

Moustache

Upper-lip placement requires careful angle and spacing.

Sideburns

Selected sideburn gaps may be blended into existing facial hair.

Scar-Related Gaps

Selected stable facial scars may be considered after assessment.

Natural placement

Why Angle and Direction Matter

Existing Growth

New grafts should follow the direction of nearby facial hair.

Shallow Placement

Recipient sites require controlled angles close to the skin.

Density Distribution

Density should be allocated according to donor supply and design.

Natural Borders

Cheek and beard borders should avoid a rigid artificial appearance.

Perfect symmetry and unlimited density should not be promised. Natural facial hair commonly contains differences in direction, texture and density between each side of the face.

Healing and gradual growth

Beard Transplant Recovery

Early recovery may include facial redness, swelling, tenderness and small scabs around the implanted hairs. Healing varies between patients.

Initial Healing

Protect the implanted area from rubbing, scratching and pressure.

Temporary Shedding

Some transplanted hairs may shed before later regrowth develops.

Early Growth

New growth may appear gradually and can initially look uneven.

Maturation

Thickness and visual density continue developing over later months.

Recipient-Area Care

  • Avoid rubbing or scratching the face
  • Follow the individual washing instructions
  • Do not pick the recipient-area scabs
  • Follow advice about shaving and grooming
  • Protect the area from pressure and knocks

Donor-Area Care

  • Keep the donor area clean as instructed
  • Follow advice about exercise and sweating
  • Use only approved products or medication
  • Attend recommended follow-up reviews
  • Report unexpected healing concerns
Seek appropriate medical advice when necessary. Contact an appropriate medical service for severe or worsening pain, heavy bleeding, spreading redness, pus, fever, breathing difficulty, an allergic reaction or if you feel seriously unwell.

Common patient questions

Beard Transplant Edinburgh FAQs

What method is used for a beard transplant?

FUE is normally used to remove individual follicular-unit grafts from a suitable donor area before implantation into the face.

Where does the donor hair come from?

Donor grafts are usually selected from a suitable area of the scalp. Donor availability and hair characteristics must be assessed.

Can a beard transplant fill patchy areas?

Selected patchy or sparse beard areas may be treated when donor hair, skin health and treatment expectations are suitable.

Can a beard transplant cover a facial scar?

Selected stable facial scars may be considered, although graft survival and achievable density can vary within scar tissue.

Does a beard transplant leave scars?

Individual FUE extraction can leave multiple small donor marks. Recipient-area healing and scar appearance vary between patients.

Can transplanted beard hair be shaved?

Once healing is complete, transplanted facial hair can generally be groomed, trimmed or shaved according to the clinic’s advice.

When does beard transplant growth begin?

Some implanted hairs may shed before gradual new growth develops over the following months. Individual timing varies.

How much does a beard transplant cost?

Cost depends on the facial-hair areas being treated, estimated graft requirements, donor suitability and procedure complexity.

Are beard transplant results guaranteed?

No. Graft survival, growth, density, healing and final appearance vary between patients.
