Hair Transplant Top-Up Edinburgh

A top-up is a smaller transplant for an area that needs more coverage. At our Edinburgh consultation, you can discuss a thin section of your hairline, a gap in your beard or an eyebrow that still looks sparse after previous treatment.

Scalp top-ups start at £750 for 100 grafts. Eyebrow and beard top-ups start at £1,000 for 100 grafts. Your surgeon will assess the area and available donor hair before recommending a graft number.

Who Can Have a Hair Transplant Top-Up?

A small area of thinning may be suitable for a top-up, provided there is enough healthy donor hair and the skin is ready for further treatment. More extensive hair loss usually needs a larger treatment plan. Your Edinburgh consultation will help establish which applies to you.

If you have already had surgery, bring any graft records and before-and-after photographs to your consultation. Your surgeon needs to check the existing result, healing and remaining donor hair before recommending another procedure.

Timing matters. Hair from the first transplant may still be developing, and adding more grafts too soon can be unnecessary. Ongoing hair loss or a scalp condition may also need attention before a top-up is considered.

Eyebrow Transplant Top-Ups

An eyebrow top-up may address a sparse tail, a gap through the body of the brow or an area that needs more coverage after earlier treatment. The new hairs need to follow the angle and direction of the eyebrow around them.

Scalp hair used in the eyebrows can continue to grow longer than the surrounding brow hair, so trimming may be needed. Your consultation will cover the proposed shape, suitable donor hair and how to look after the result.

Beard Transplant Top-Ups

A beard top-up may help with a small gap on the cheek, chin or jawline. The grafts are planned around your existing beard, taking account of where the hair grows and the direction it lies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will 100 or 250 grafts be enough?

It depends on the area and the hair already present. A small gap may need relatively few grafts, while broader thinning needs more. Your surgeon will estimate the graft number after examining the area and donor hair.

How long should I wait after my first transplant?

The first result needs time to develop before another procedure is planned. Full scalp transplant results can take 10–18 months. Your surgeon will assess healing, growth and the reason for the remaining thin area before advising on timing.

Can I have a top-up after treatment at another clinic?

You can contact us for an assessment. Tell us when and where you had treatment, and bring any graft records or photographs you have. Whether further surgery is suitable depends on the existing result, your donor hair and medical assessment.

Is a graft the same as a hair?

No. A graft is a small unit of hair follicles and can contain more than one hair. The choice of grafts depends on the area being treated; finer single-hair grafts are particularly useful for detailed eyebrow work.

What is recovery like after a top-up?

You will need to protect the treated area and follow the clinic’s washing and aftercare instructions. Redness, swelling, small crusts and temporary shedding can occur. A smaller graft count does not mean there is no healing period.

Are there risks with a smaller transplant?

Yes. Risks include infection, bleeding, scarring and poor or uneven growth. Your surgeon should explain the risks for your treatment, the likely result and what happens if you need further care.
